How to Stop a Cat From Urinating on Everything

No matter how cute and cuddly your cat is, when she goes potty throughout your house, there's nothing cute about it. Reasons for inappropriate urination are a dime a dozen. Make slight living adjustments to find out what works, so you don't come home to smelly puddles on the floor.

Step 1

Bring your feline companion to a veterinarian to rule out medical conditions, such as a urinary tract infection, diabetes and kidney failure, which can be the cause of the undesired urination throughout the house.

Step 2

Clean your cat's litter box thoroughly, because a dirty little box isn't appealing to anyone, including your cat. It might motivate her to relieve herself elsewhere. Scoop out dirty litter daily, and wash the litter box with mild soap and water at least once every two weeks.

Step 3

Buy a second litter box to ensure your cat has easy access to her potty when she has to go. For example, put one box upstairs and one downstairs so your cat doesn't have to travel all through the house to get to her litter box. Place the litter boxes in quiet areas of the house that are easily accessed -- don't hide the box.

Step 4

Change the litter you're using, because it might be the reason your cat's urinating everywhere except in her litter box. If you're using scented litter, switch to unscented; if you're using a non-clumping litter, try a clumping litter.

Step 5

Clean up the cat urine in the inappropriate areas with an enzyme-based cleaning product so you eliminate the bacteria that cause odor. You don't want your cat to be able to smell her urine, because it might entice her to urinate in the same spot again.

Step 6

Cover up the area where your pet companion likes to urinate to discourage her from urinating there again. Put a litter box over the spot or spread toys over the area. Alternatively, place your cat's food dish or a piece of aluminum foil over the area.
